The Irish Society has been active in the greater Ottawa-Gatineau area in various forms since 1957, and in 2007, we are pleased to be celebrating our 50th year of promoting Irish / Irish-Canadian culture and heritage. In 1995, the Society was re-organized and incorporated in the Province of Ontario as The Irish Society of the National Capital Region. The Society currently has approximately 1,000 members, and is a member of Ottawa Festivals d’ Ottawa.

The Society’s main objectives are the promotion of Irish / Irish-Canadian culture and heritage, and the strengthening and promotion of the Irish / Irish-Canadian community.
The Society works closely with other local Irish organizations (e.g. Capital Feis, Comhaltas Ceoltoiri Eireann, Ottawa Gaels Gaelic Football Club, Ottawa Irish Rugby Club, Tara Players Theatre of Ottawa) as well as with the Ireland Fund of Canada, and the Embassy of Ireland in Ottawa.
The Irish Society’s activities include:
- our annual Irish Week in March
featuring the St. Patrick’s Parade and Party
2007 marks the 25th anniversary of the Parade - our annual “Award of Distinction Luncheon”
honouring a person who has made significant contributions to the community over a period of time
- the Erin Luncheon in support of St. Patrick’s Home of Ottawa
- publication of our magazine Ottawa Irish Voice
- operation of our website (www.irishsocietyncr.com)
- promotion of the Irish language
- genealogy studies
- operation of our “Drop In Centre”
- scholarships
- Celtic Cross Memorial commemoration
- social events, as well as fund-raising events such as our annual Golf Tournament.
An elected volunteer Board of Directors manages the affairs of the Society. Our Annual General Meeting is held in June. People interested in joining the Society, or becoming active in the activities of the Society are encouraged to contact us.
