During the last number of years, our Council has promoted responsible behaviour among young people through the Drug & Alcohol poster awareness contest at local schools.
The knight most responsible for the success of this project - Brother Barry Keane - has taken his dedication even further with his invention of a board game called Denial. Combining elements of trivia, snakes and ladders and good common sense, the game is designed to teach young people the negative consequences of drug and alcohol abuse.
The positives move you around the board quickly and the negatives slow down your progress. Players draw from two decks of cards - one is Choices and the other, Consequences. There are 80 different questions. For example, if you smoke a pack of cigarettes a day, does it cost you $800, $1,600 or $3,000 a year? The answer: $3,000 is enough to make even the most cynical kid take notice. The game has been shipped to many schools throughout Eastern and Southern Ontario. It has also been test marketed through Zellers. The game is available for you to take home and show to your family. Thanks to Barry for his dedication to this cause. We wish him every success with the board game.
